The Athens Banner-Herald editorializes on 2008 qualifying for the state legislature, saying it's almost shocking that a majority of legislators will be returning to the Capitol unopposed after the failures of the current legislature to enact tax reform, meaningful water planning or Sunday beer and wine sales.
Meanwhile, Amy Morton of the Georgia Women Vote blog points out that while Democrats could have done better, they are challenging more Republican incumbents in Congress, the state Senate and the state House than Republicans are challening incumbent Democrats. She notes that South Georgia Democratic legislators like Mike Cheokas (D - Americus), Ellis Black (D - Valdosta) and Amy Carter (D - Valdosta) are all getting a pass despite representing only marginally Democratic districts. Melanie Goux, of Blog for Democracy, doesn't exactly see eye to eye with Morton. In a comment, she says she's been trying hard not to vent about the pathetic state of qualifying on the Democratic side.
Finally, GOP pundit Erick Erickson notes on Peach Pundit that the GOP didn't do very well at recruiting. But with a 30+ seat majority in the House and a (percent-wise) even larger 12 seat majority in the Senate, they are almost guaranteed to return with a position of considerable power even when qualifying is a near failure.
Why did Jane Kidd fail to enlist candidates?
The new Democratic Party State Chair, Jane Kidd, is not an effective leader, judging by the lack-luster field of challengers to GOP State Reps and State Senators. When she was campaigning for her job, she listed her Number 1 priority as actively recruiting Democratic challengers to the GOP-dominated legislature. Everyone knows that a Presidential election turns out the most voters for change, and by not fielding a full team of Democratic candidates, she has blown a tremendous opportunity. Her laissez-faire approach to her job has resulted in great dissappoinment for GA Democrats. We deserve better.
Is that Chris or Bobby?
who did y'all recruit this year or last cycle?
Neither Chris nor Bobby
Mike Berlon.
