The New York Times reports in an article today that the Presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama's withdrawal of television advertising in Georgia prior to the two conventions will become permanent.  Obama is unveiling a new strategy for the General Election that aims to spend television money and other resources largely on the traditional battleground states from 2000 and 2004.

Teilhet Attacks Cox

Cobb County State Rep. Rob Teilhet will air an ad on Friday's Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader episode that State School Superintendent Kathy Cox is set to appear on.  The spot questions Cox's appearance and offers Teilhet's own prescriptions for improving education in Georgia, including reducing class sizes and expanding Pre-K.  The advertisement is available online on YouTube.

A Fulton County Superior Court judge has ruled that Public Service Commission candidate Jim Powell, who won the July Democratic primary with 85% of the vote is qualified to stay on the ballot for the November 4 General Election.  The ruling is a rebuke to Secretary of State Karen Handel, a Republican, who had attempted to remove Powell from the ballot even after an Adminstrative Law Judge decided he was eligible.  Handel didn't notify Powell that he'd been disqualified until just days before the primary election.  Powell had previously sought an emergenc

California pays for inmate health costs

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that an inmate healthcare administrator for the California prisons is asking a court to order the state to pay upwards of $8 billion for inmate health care.  California is already looking at bridging a $3 billion budget gap.  In Georgia, state officials are looking at a potential deficit of at least $1 billion, and concerns are growing that courts could mandate payments in the areas of mental health and rural education that could send an already stressed budget process into crisis mode.

With word that turnout for the runoff could be as low as 5%, reports from one area of the state are of a robust turnout that could equal or surpass that of the July 15 primary.  Voters in North DeKalb County precincts report heavy turnout, which could deprive Vernon Jones of winning his home county as results come in tonight.  In the July 15 primary, Jones scored 42% in DeKalb in a 5 way race.

Restraining Order Denied

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Tom Campbell, a former Republican legislator from Roswell has denied the Democratic Party of Georgia's request for a temporary restraining order to prevent the state from enforcing the Voter ID law in Tuesday's primary. Campbell was appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue, a defendant in the case. In 2001, Campbell joined most Republicans in the General Assembly in voting against changing the Georgia flag.
